Dorothy Aitchison ~ at Dorothy Ley Hospice, Toronto, on Friday, November 9, 2018, Mrs. Dorothy Aitchison of Mississauga, and formerly of Harriston, in her 101st year.

Dorothy Margaret Ziegler was born May 7, 1918, on her father's birthday, in Minto Township. She was the first of ten children born to Will and Grace (Stinson) Ziegler. On August 3, 1942 she was married to Donald McLean Aitchison, the love of her life, for 44 happy years, until Don's death in 1986.

She was pre-deceased by her father in 1961, her Mother in 1981, her beloved siblings Fred, Milt and Albert 'Happy' Ziegler, Ruth Nesbitt, and Irene Binns, and sisters and brothers-in-law Alma Ziegler, Doris Ziegler, Gord Binns, Neil Coghlin, Eldon Nesbitt, Glen Overend, Jim Robertson, and Warner Tomlinson, and by her much loved in-laws Mary and Eddie Diemert, Wyn and Burt Dixon, and Jo and Harold Martin.

Dorothy will be greatly missed by her children: Fred and Dianne Aitchison of Orangeville, Lynne and Jim Bullock of Mississauga, Neil and Helen Aitchison of Waterloo, Mark and Pattie Aitchison of Mississauga, and Fran and Larry Hale of Harriston, by her loving grandchildren: Cathy and Gordie Dunlap, Mark and Larissa Bullock, Debbie and Derek Deluca, Don Aitchison, Shawn Aitchison and Lisa Marshall, Jono and Ruby Aitchison, Tanis Noll and Chuck Woodward, Peter and Esther Aitchison, Tammy and Rob Perry, Todd and Jen Aitchison, Andrew Aitchison and Preston MacNeil, James Aitchison, Stephen Aitchison and Bridget Braun, Jennifer Hale-Adam and Kyle Adam, Laura and Ken Mazurek, and Julie Hale and Ed Kozak, by great-grandchildren: Braydon and Julia, Barrett, Bane, Benny and Braxton, Nate and Alicia, Margot, Saoirse, and Phoebe, Josh and Marigold, Emily, Jadyn, Justin and Kayla, Patrick and Rebecca, Tanner and Brier, Abby and Bennett, Logan, Presley, and by her great-great grandchild Ashton.

Loved by her sisters Jewell Coghlin of Listowel, Mary Robertson of Waterloo, Wynifred Overend of Dunnville, and Gloria Tomlinson of Minden, and by her sister-in-law June Ziegler of Palmerston.

Dorothy lived and worked in Harriston, managing her father’s grocery store, raising her family and managing Dorothy’s Hat Shop and later Dorothy’s Lady’s Wear. Dorothy was an active member of Harriston United Church, singing in the choir, baking and serving food, and was one of the first women Elders of the church. After retirement she worked for Census Canada and continued to be a great baker and homemaker. In 1996 she retired again, moving to Toronto to live with Mark and Pattie and their family. There she found a whole new circle of friends at Islington United Church where she worshipped and participated for 22 years.

Visitation will be held at Islington United Church (25 Burnhamthorpe Rd, Toronto) on Monday, November 26th from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 27th at 11:00 a.m. A further funeral service will be held at Harriston United Church (57 Young St. W., Harriston) on Wednesday, November 28th at 1:30 p.m., with visitation prior from 12:00 noon until the time of service.

Interment in Harriston Cemetery.
